If you want to try the best new breakfast in the city, head to the Hard Times Sundaes burger stand in the UrbanSpace Vanderbilt food hall. This gooey delight contains two fried eggs, tons of cheese, bacon, and a four-ounce burger patty, all stacked on a poppy seed Kaiser roll. Be sure to get up early if you want to chow down on this burger, though; it’s only available from 8am to 11am on weekdays and 9am to 11am on weekends.
It’s more of an egg sandwich featuring a burger, rather than the traditional “breakfast burger” where the burger is the star and the egg is just a novel garnish. Hard Times Sundaes’ owner Andrew Zurica claims that making the eggs the key ingredient was his plan all along. He says that despite numerous requests for egg-topped burgers, he could not bear to do it, claiming “eggs are for breakfast.” Instead, he rolled out this soon to be iconic breakfast creation, which contains a burger probably only because his restaurant is a burger joint.
If you like what you taste, make a second trip to Hard Times Sundaes to check out more of Zurica’s modern yet still unfancy takes on burger stand classics. Think deep-fried, bacon-wrapped hot dogs topped with a buffet of toppings and triple-stacked burgers with American cheese, bacon, and caramelized onions on a fluffy potato roll.
