Michael Lacey: The Meticulous Mathematician

Michael Lacey is a pillar in the mathematics community, working tirelessly to contribute meaningful research to his field. He is an American Mathematician currently residing in Georgia, where he has been teaching at the Georgia Institute of Technology since 1996.

After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1987, Lacey when on to complete his first postdoctoral research at both Louisiana State University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill respectively. Read more: Michael Lacey | Wikipedia

His thesis covered the probability of Banach spaces and solved a problem relating to the law of iterated logarithm for empirical characteristic functions. During this time, Lacey had the opportunity to continue work under his friend and mentor Walter Philipp. Together, Lacey and Philipp went on to provide proof of the central limit theorem.

By all accounts Michael Lacey is a dedicated professor, going beyond the expectations of his position to provide a quality education to his students. While some students may find his classes difficult to understand, many students have found that his classes have adequately prepared them for their future in mathematics.

Lacey is a formidable man and a leader in his field. He uses his knowledge to give his students the very best education in mathematics that he can possibly provide. He is also a straightforward man, presenting his material in a clear, matter-of-fact tone. This is a fact that is evident in his class planning and the attitudes of his past students.

In addition to his successful teaching career, Lacey is an avid researcher. He has contributed to over 30 publications, many of them sanctioned by the National Science Foundation, the Salem Prize, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Fulbright Foundation, and the Simons Foundation among others.

Truly, Lacey’s hard work and dedication has solidified is position as an important contributor to his field.
